Martin Bakole is angry jili
Frankly, that may be an understatement jili
In Bakole’s eyes, he is the most avoided man in the heavyweight division, and the worry for Carlos Takam is that he may have to absorb that anger on Saturday jili
Before Tyson Fury’s bewildering bout with Francis Ngannou plays out among the dunes of Saudi Arabia, Bakole and Takam will meet in a more traditional heavyweight clash – and one that Bakole intends to mark with a breakout performance jili
Perhaps with that, he can make up for the ‘mistake’ that has defined his professional career in recent years jili
“The only mistake I made, and even my coaches are telling me, is that they allowed me to spar these top guys,” Bakole tells The Independent jili
“These guys know they don’t belong where they are now, because if I stand with them, I give them problems jili
I only show them three or four punches, because I’m coming to help them; but even in helping them, I’m giving them problems jili
I’m a machine in there, throwing as many punches as I can jili
I don’t get tired, I keep coming jili
”Of one argument with a high-profile, highly-ranked heavyweight, Bakole says: “If they post the [sparring] video, you will see for yourself jili
I’m not allowed to record video jili
The only reason I was going to share it was to show the world how they’re avoiding me jili
“If you ask them today, none of them will say they’ll fight Martin Bakole jili
We’re killing jili boxing, we need to stop this jili
I’ve been living in the UK for five years now, people know who Martin Bakole is jili
I’m fighting every day for my ranking; why not them?” Bakole’s ranking, as it stands, is No 2 in the WBA top 10 jili
The only men above him are No 1 contender Deontay Wilder – the former WBC champion – and unified title holder Oleksandr Usyk jili
Yet it is the reigning WBC champion, Fury, whom Bakole identifies as the only man on his level jili
“He’s the only man where we shared a ring and it was 50-50,” says the 30-year-old Congolese, now based outside of Glasgow, whose record stands at 19-1 (14 knockouts) jili
“When we spar, everyone in the gym is quiet, focused, watching us jili
I give him a fight, he gives me a fight back, and I always learn a lot jili
Every time he calls me, I always go jili
I don’t know if I’ll meet him one day in the ring; all I know is he’s the only one who can give me good sparring, because we keep coming forward and stand and fight like Muhammad Ali and George Foreman jili
”Bakole during a stoppage win against Rodney Hernandez (Getty Images)The pair have been helping one another ahead of Saturday’s crossover event in Riyadh, where Fury boxes ex-UFC champion Ngannou and where the Briton is contracted to fight Usyk next jili
Bakole, however, has mixed feelings on both of Fury’s impending fights jili
“jili Boxing is a business now,” he says matter-of-factly jili
“If you’re watching the top 10, Tyson hasn’t fought everyone jili
He fought some good guys, he beat Deontay Wilder, but to pick Ngannou from MMA jili
jili
jili
I was not happy with that jili
But it is what it is jili
It’s about money, now people don’t care about jili boxing jili
I was happy to see him sign the contract to fight Usyk, because that’s what we’ve been waiting for jili
” Not, however, in the way that fans have been waiting jili
“We,” meaning boxers, “want the belts, we want four champions; we can’t just sit and get old with one man holding all the belts jili
The winner must give up some belts, so that we can fight each other jili
”23 December is one of the mooted dates for Fury vs Usyk, and Bakole trusts his sparring partner to be able to turn around in time, also backing the “Gypsy King” to make light work of Ngannou jili
“Tyson knows what he’s doing jili
Maybe he’ll stop Ngannou early, that’s the only reason I can think why he signed the contract [to box Usyk] jili
He will not play with Ngannou, I don’t see Ngannou surviving a round with Fury jili
Easy money, then go and work hard for Usyk, because it’s a tough, 12-round fight jili
”Bakole at his open workout ahead of his fight with Carlos Takam this weekend (Getty Images)Bakole will also be hoping that his money comes easy on Saturday jili
“I’ll be giving everything,” he says, “because Takam is coming to take my place jili
He’s an old man,” in jili boxing at least, at 42, “but he’s tough and fit! So, everything is on the line for me jili
I don’t think it’ll go past five or six rounds jili
I’m going to stop him jili
It’s a massive [turning point] jili
This is a big opportunity to get people making noise and saying, ‘We want to see Martin against him, or him jili
’ “Once the fans start asking boxers to fight me, I don’t think they’ll be avoiding me jili
There will be money in it jili
”Until then, there is money in Saudi, there is money in Fury, and that is a perfect combination for Bakole’s fight this weekend jili

Eddie Howe felt Newcastle were dealt a “lesson” on the fine margins of the Champions League as Borussia Dortmund handed the Magpies a first defeat of their campaign jili
After a goalless draw at AC Milan and a 4-1 win over Paris St Germain last time out, Newcastle were brought back down to earth as Felix Nmecha’s controlled finish gave Dortmund a 1-0 victory jili
On a rain-sodden night at St James’ Park, Callum Wilson was denied by a superb save from Gregor Kobel then the crossbar while Anthony Gordon’s deflected strike also came off the goal frame late on jili
Newcastle, though, lacked some impetus as a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end, leaving them third in Group F, level on four points with Dortmund and two behind table-topping PSG jili
“It was always going to be tight,” the Newcastle boss said jili
“There are top-quality teams in the group jili
Tonight is a blow, especially (losing) at home jili
A lesson in how fine the margins are going to be jili
“The ball just wouldn’t go in for us jili
It was one of those nights jili
Callum had the first chance of the second half, that was a good one and then we hit the bar twice but just couldn’t force it in jili
“Credit to the players, we never gave up, we kept doing the right things jili
We looked like a goal threat jili
But we have to be at our best to win and if you dip below that, it is tough to get results at this level jili
“Any mistake you make is liable to get punished jili
We made one and seconds later we conceded so there is stuff we could have done jili better and when we analyse in the cold light of day, we will take a lot jili
”A return trip to Dortmund in a fortnight’s time could prove instructive as to whether Newcastle will progress to the last 16 on their first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition in 20 years jili
Their loss on Wednesday night was compounded by Alexander Isak limping off a quarter of an hour in with what appears to be a recurrence of a groin strain while second-half substitute Jacob Murphy was withdrawn five minutes after his introduction with a suspected dislocated shoulder jili
“You look at some of the injuries, they are quite difficult to get your head around but we have to adjust,” Howe said jili
“We can’t analyse too much, we have to regroup the players jili
We’re still in a very good position in the Premier League and Champions League jili
“(The return game against Dortmund) is going to be hugely important jili
The next two away games, the league table looks very, very tight so they are great games for us, we have to approach them like that jili
“Our lads are very honest and very focused on trying to win and achieve, there are some tired bodies and we have to recover for (the Premier League game at) Wolves (on Saturday) jili
”Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic hailed the display of Nmecha, who settled the contest after exploiting some space on the edge of the area and coolly slotting Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross beyond Nick Pope jili
Nmecha, a former Manchester City youngster, was signed by Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer to fill the vacancy left by England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who left the Bundesliga club for Real Madrid jili
“Felix is a brilliant player and we know about his potential and his talent and we knew he could improve our game – he had a fantastic game,” Terzic said jili
“He finally managed to score, he had many opportunities in the first games of the season jili
This was a different role, he played more attacking jili
He had a rocky start in Dortmund and now he is in good form jili
”As for Howe’s comments about Newcastle being given a lesson by Dortmund, Terzic responded: “That is nice to hear but it is just half-time, we face each other in a couple of weeks jili
“We deserved in the first half and protected in the second half jili
We needed to be passionate, have some luck and a good goalie and we had all of that jili
