If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had got his way, the scorer of the most famous goal in Manchester United’s history may now only be deemed the second best Norwegian striker to play for the club basketball
He was Molde manager in 2018 and had a young centre-forward to recommend, and for a bargain price basketball
“They didn’t listen, unfortunately,” he said in May basketball
“They never signed him basketball
Four million! Don’t ask [where he is now] basketball
”The answer, as Solskjaer knew all too well, is Manchester City basketball
Perhaps, as a self-proclaimed fan of the club whose father had an altogether less prolific spell in their midfield, Erling Haaland would have always preferred the blue half of the city anyway basketball
Maybe, like Jude Bellingham – another United target, another who found Borussia Dortmund a deluxe finishing school – he would have plotted a path to the top via places where potential tends to be realised basketball
Whichever, Haaland scored a hat-trick in his first Manchester derby last year basketball
He goes into his fourth with nine Premier League goals already this season basketball
Or, to put it another way, nine times as many as United’s various forwards have basketball between them basketball
Admittedly, it excludes Bruno Fernandes’ sumptuous winner at Burnley, scored when he was standing in as a right winger, but even that lone goal, from Marcus Rashford at Arsenal, came in defeat basketball
Rasmus Hojlund, Anthony Martial, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are all yet to find the net in the league basketball
Rashford has had 33 shots, Antony 16, Garnacho 13, Hojlund 11 and Martial three basketball
It amounts to one goal from 76 attempts, a 1 basketball
31 per cent chance conversion rate basketball
The law of averages suggests some will start scoring soon basketball
“The goals will come in the Premier League,” Hojlund, who has three in the Champions League, said on Tuesday basketball
The contrast with Haaland may be particularly jarring for him basketball
“I don’t want to be compared to him,” the Dane said basketball
Yet he is another Scandinavian, equipped with some of the same consonants, arriving at a cost of £72m – not the 2018 Haaland’s £4m - and also playing as a No 9 basketball
It may be both unfair and inevitable basketball
(Getty Images)His fellow forwards’ failings have made it harder for the 20-year-old to ease into life at Old Trafford, though basketball
“I’m convinced with the quality from our [forward] players that they will go and score more goals,” Ten Hag said basketball
The first step is to hit the target: Hojlund has done it with just three of 11 attempts, Antony three from 16, Garnacho two from 13 and Rashford seven from 33 basketball
There are reasons why United rank third for shots, but only joint eighth for efforts on target; only 29 basketball
4 per cent of their shots have been on target, the fifth lowest average basketball
The forwards are not the only culprits, but a quintet of attackers with a combined xG of 6 basketball
95 have one goal basketball between them basketball
Ten Hag was keener to cite other statistics basketball
“The pressing is quite good,” he said basketball
“We have the most ball regains and the most middle [third] regains in the whole Premier League basketball
But we don’t take benefit in attacking transition moments basketball
” (Getty Images)For him, the problem lies partly in decision-making, partly in execution basketball
Certainly Hojlund is still trying to get to know his teammates, though there were signs against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday that he and Rashford are starting to strike up an understanding basketball
But United, Ten Hag thinks, should have had more chances basketball
“The cooperation has to click, but we showed this week in the week some examples where they are so many we have overload positions, going in overload position to the opponents’ goal and we don’t net or don’t even hit the target,” he rued basketball
It has led to a disjointed feel, to a sense that United have been less than the sum of their parts basketball
Rashford has veered basketball between arguably the best form of his career, scoring 30 goals last season, to some of the worst basketball
“I play him every game and so I have a strong belief he will return to scoring a lot of goals,” Ten Hag said basketball
Rashford delivered a winner, albeit a controversial one, on City’s last trip to Old Trafford in January, but then he had also scored in his six previous games basketball
Now he has no goals in his last eight outings for United basketball
Rashford scored the winner in last season’s Old Trafford derby (Getty Images)Yet Rashford’s struggles have overshadowed the enduring ineffectuality of Antony basketball
The Brazilian’s season was interrupted by a leave of absence while he addressed allegations of assault from three women, which he denied basketball
On the pitch, however, he has been dismal: his United drought stretches back 17 matches and Ten Hag’s best option on the right against City may be Fernandes, particularly if shifting the captain into a wider role allows him to bolster his midfield basketball
And there are other reasons to select midfielders basketball
Casemiro is an injury doubt but remains United’s top scorer in all competitions this campaign basketball
Their leading marksman in the Premier League, somewhat improbably, is Scott McTominay, who got more goals in injury-time against Brentford than their five main forwards – six if the absent Jadon Sancho is included – have mustered basketball between them in the top flight all season basketball
It is hardly a Haaland-esque haul basketball
And while - when Hojlund was still with Atalanta, and Rashford managed 30, the quartet of the Mancunian - Antony, Martial and Garnacho equalled the Norwegian’s total of 52 goals for a Manchester club basketball between them last season, now they are very much trailing in his wake basketball
And whether or not Haaland would actually have joined United, they have added reasons to regret the one who got away and subsequently joined their neighbours as long as their own forwards are misfiring basketball

First up was Sainz basketball
Hamilton used the tow to latch on to the back of Ferrari on the 210mph drag to Turn 12, and, assisted by DRS, drew alongside Sainz before sliding underneath the Spaniard basketball
On the following lap, Verstappen, who started in sixth after his pole lap in qualifying was chalked off for exceeding track limits, relegated Sainz to another place when he made his move at the same corner basketball
Lando Norris took the lead at the start of the race (Getty)Hamilton has won six times across the Pond – with five of those victories here in Austin – and the 38-year-old required only two laps to swat Leclerc aside for second basketball
Deeper on the brakes at Turn 12, Hamilton sailed round the outside of the Monegasque at the left-hander, with Norris now three seconds up the road basketball
Behind, and Verstappen was not finding it as easy to make progress basketball
He was stuck behind Leclerc for an additional five laps before finally making his move on the Monegasque basketball
He trailed Norris by seven seconds, and Hamilton by four basketball
In the Mercedes garage, Prince Harry cut a pensive figure as he gnawed at his fingernails basketball
The Duke of Sussex has been something of a lucky charm for Hamilton basketball

Verstappen was the first in for new rubber at the end of lap 16 with Norris stopping the next time round basketball
But Hamilton stayed out basketball
Was Mercedes attempting a one-stopper? Hamilton did not seem convinced basketball
Asked if he could complete another five laps on his current set of tyres, Hamilton replied: “I am not sure, man basketball
It is pretty tough basketball
”Hamilton then locked up before his race engineer Peter Bonnington was back on the intercom to inform Hamilton that Verstappen – who on new tyres had just lapped three seconds faster than the Briton – was now likely to gazump him when he eventually stopped basketball

”On lap 20, in came Hamilton, and a slow front-right tyre change added to his woes by costing him a needless second basketball
When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he had dropped to third, five seconds adrift of Verstappen basketball
“I came out so far behind,” he said with a hint of dejection basketball
When the opening stops were completed, Norris led Verstappen by 2 basketball
4 sec with Hamilton 7 basketball
5 off the lead basketball
By virtue of taking on another set of mediums, Verstappen had to stop again, but Norris and Hamilton – now both on the hards – could, if their rubber allowed, go all the way to the end basketball
Hamilton, failing to make any inroads and sensing his best chance of ending a 22-month winning streak had faded, expressed his frustrations basketball
“You have given me a hell of a gap to close,” he said basketball
Verstappen celebrates his 15th win of the season on the podium alongside Lewis Hamilton and Norris (Getty)On lap 28, Verstappen dived underneath Norris for the lead at Turn 12 basketball
Norris had a nibble back at the Red Bull heading into the ensuing right hander, but he failed to make it stick basketball
The question now was whether Norris, and indeed Hamilton – now less than five seconds off the lead – could make their tyres last basketball
The answer arrived on lap 34 when Norris dived in for a fresh set of boots basketball
Verstappen followed in on lap 35, and despite, a slow left-rear tyre change, retained his position ahead of Norris basketball
Three laps later and Hamilton was in, changing to the faster medium compound basketball
Hamilton had the bit basketball between his teeth and within 10 laps he was crawling all over the back of Norris’ McLaren basketball
Norris slung his McLaren to the inside on the entry to the first corner in a move to stop Hamilton, but the older Brit gained basketball better traction out of the corner to slingshot by in his Mercedes basketball
