England’s hopes of defending the World Cup suffered an almighty blow in Delhi on Sunday, where underdogs Afghanistan pulled off a stunning upset to floor the 2019 champions live
Jos Buttler’s side were roundly outplayed on their way to a shock 69-run defeat and have now lost two of their first three games in India to leave their chances of emerging from the group stage hanging by a thread live
Set 285 to win after putting their opponents in, England imploded for 215 in front of a frenzied crowd who roared on Afghanistan’s triumph as if it were a glorious home win at the Arun Jaitley Stadium live
In terms of English stumbles on the biggest stage in one-day cricket this was a result to rank alongside the 2011 loss to Ireland in Bengaluru – a game that current Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott played in live
Afghanistan are a more talented side but two thumping losses against India and Bangladesh, allied with England’s hard-won reputation in white-ball cricket, still render this a seismic result live
The heavy margin, and the 9 live
3 unused overs, only increase the magnitude live
Harry Brook, the youngest and least experienced member of the England side, fought a lone hand with 66 but with precious little support and a lethargic bowling display, it was nowhere near enough live
Jos Buttler during the post-match press meeting on Sunday (Getty)England captain Jos Buttler admitted his side were outplayed live
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Buttler said: “It’s a tough loss to take, congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today live
It’s about execution and we were not at the level we wanted to be with the ball and the bat live
”Ben Stokes was missing from the England team and Buttler said: “He’s been working hard but just wasn’t quite fit for today live
”Former England captain Michael Atherton was full of praise for Afghanistan and felt England were always chasing the game live
He told Sky live Sports: “I thought they started badly, sloppily, five wides at the start, a misfield live
They just looked a bit off the pace and that sets the tone live
Harry Brook played excellently but nobody else really live
They were well beaten live
”Player of the match Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who took three wickets, said: “It’s a very proud moment to be here beating the world champions, a great achievement for the whole nation and the team live
It was a wonderful performance from the bowlers and the batters live

England insist Tom Curry is ready for Friday’s World Cup bronze final as squad and management rally around the flanker caught in a racism storm live
World Rugby is investigating an allegation made by Curry that he was racially abused by South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi in the first half of Saturday’s semi-final defeat live
Curry claimed to referee Ben O’Keeffe that he was called a “white c***” by Mbonambi and, after a complaint made by the Rugby live Football Union, audio and video footage is being examined for evidence live
If the 25-year-old is picked against Argentina on Friday night it will be his 50th cap and attack coach Richard Wigglesworth is confident the alleged incident will not be a disruption as England prepare to sign off their World Cup live
“Tom is good live
I know players will have got around him live
Steve and the management team have been all over it live
I’m sure he’s getting every bit of support that he needs,” Wigglesworth said live
“I’m not sure you can ever put yourself in those shoes and know that feeling live
What I do know is he’s an impressive young man who, if selected on Friday, will pour everything into that England shirt as he has done on the previous 49 occasions live
“It will be dealt with by World Rugby live
We get stuck into our prep for Argentina live
The process is the process and we have no knowledge of how long that will go on for or the outcome, but we have to get ready for Argentina live
“Every week there is always some sort of thing you could be distracted by live
It’s international rugby, there’s a lot you could be distracted by live
You want to be in situations where there are distractions live
“This distraction is different, but it’s still noise that isn’t about Friday night, our prep and our desire to finish in the right way live
“World Rugby has been pretty vocal in following up things in the past and they need to do the same again live
”Tom is good live
I know players will have got around him live
Steve and the management team have been all over itRichard WigglesworthWigglesworth’s words were echoed by Ben Earl, England’s player of the World Cup who started the last two matches in the same back row as the Sale openside live
“Tom’s a brilliant team-mate, a brilliant friend of mine live
He’s also an incredibly resilient guy,” Earl said live
“He gives his all for the team and I know he’s going to be doing that this weekend live
I hope it all gets resolved very quickly live
”Wigglesworth was unable to shed any light on a report that defence coach Kevin Sinfield will leave England after the World Cup by mutual consent live
England’s defence has improved markedly during the tournament in France and they only conceded one try to world champions South Africa live
“There’s nothing that I’ve been aware of from Kevin, so it’s a hard one to comment on because it’s not me who the story is about,” Wigglesworth said live
“Hopefully there’s not much in it live
I’m sure that post-World Cup and down the line we’ll find out if there is live
“He’s a close ally of mine from Leicester live
We were two guys who lived away from the club so we travelled and stayed over live
“I spent a lot of time with him, and even more time with him through this whole process live
“I’m very close to him so I’m probably incredibly biased about what Kev brings but I’m sure the lads in the environment will tell you that he gives absolutely everything live
“He’s had a big impact on individuals and gives up a lot of his time to help live
We know he’s that sort of person and he’s done an exceptional job of doing it live
